How to type symbols on your keyboard

Most symbols are easier to copy, but a handful are worth learning. Keyboard layouts vary, and these shortcuts assume a US layout.

Emoji picker

Windows: Win + .
Mac: Ctrl + ⌘ + Space
Both include many symbols as well as emoji.

Windows Alt codes

Hold Alt, type the number on the number pad, then release Alt. Laptops without a number pad usually need the picker instead.

Linux

In most GTK apps, press Ctrl + Shift + U, type the code point such as 2665, then press Enter.
